"It used to be

hard for me

to get through my day because of headaches.

Now that I am pain-free, I wakes up and am ready to take on my day."

-Mary R.

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. The main nervous system disorder that we treat here at NaturalStart is headaches and migraines.

A headache is pain or discomfort in the head or face area. Headaches vary greatly in terms of pain location, pain intensity, and how frequently they occur. As a result of this variation, several categories of headache have been created by the International Headache Society to more precisely define specific types of headaches.

Nervous System Disorders We Treat

  •  This type of headache is distinguished by the fact that symptoms other than pain occur as part of the headache. Nausea and vomiting, lightheadedness, sensitivity to light (photophobia), and other visual symptoms typically occur.

  • Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. Stress and muscle tension are often factors in tension-type headaches. While symptoms may differ, the following are common symptoms of a tension-type headache:

    • Slow onset of the headache

    • Head usually hurts on both sides

    • Pain is dull or feels like a band or vice around the head

    • Pain may involve the back (posterior) part of the head or neck

    • Pain is mild to moderate, but not severe

  • Cluster headaches. Cluster headaches usually occur in a series that may last weeks or months, and the headache series may return every year or two. While people often experience symptoms differently, the following are the most common symptoms of a cluster headache:

    • Severe pain on one side of the head, usually behind one eye

    • The eye that is affected may be red and watery with a droopy lid and small pupil

    • Swelling of the eyelid

    • Runny nose or congestion

    • Swelling of the forehead

  • In addition to the specific diseases listed here, we have the ability to treat most nervous system imbalance-related diseases. There are many factors that can affect the functioning of the nervous system, including physical and emotional stress, gastrointestinal dysfunction, infections, genetic mutations, food sensitivity/allergy, heavy metal toxicity, poor diet and lifestyle, lack of exercise, and more. For most of these  conditions, improvement of overall health is the first step.

Mental Health Treatment

  • It is estimated that 90 percent of the body's serotonin (happy & calm neurotransmitter) is made in the digestive tract. Because of this, mental health diseases are often directly related to gastrointestinal dysfunction,  and we have to address this dysfunction in order to heal the neurotransmitter imbalances. The 4R program is a four step program for healing gastrointestinal dysfunction. The four steps of the 4R program are:

    1. RID: food sensitivities and allergies, infections, poor diet, stress

    2. REPLACE: digestive enzymes, Hydrochloric acid

    3. REPAIR: restore the health of the gut mucosa using herbs, food, and nutrients

    4. REPLENISH: replenish the gut flora using specific strains of probiotics and food

In this 4R Program, we utilize a variety of treatments, such as supplements, herbs, homeopathy diet modification, detoxification, colon hydrotherapy, and more.

  • Supplements, herbs and homeopathy can address the root cause of mental health illness and also act medicinally to alleviate the symptoms and protect the body from further damage, while the root cause of the symptoms are being addressed. After evaluating you with an extensive intake, physical exam, and laboratory testing, Dr. Fong will prescribe a customized treatment plan for you. The eventual goal for you is true overall system balance, where you will not need any support, conventional or naturopathic, because the "root cause" of the imbalance has been addressed.

  • Your genetic blueprint plays a vital role in the creation and metabolism of neurotransmitters, and the pathways of detoxification. In an mental health case, Dr. Fong will often run genetic tests to determine if you are predisposed to have poor methylation, detoxification, nervous, and immune system pathways because these predispositions often lead to mental health illness. When the body cannot detoxify harmful toxins from the body, the toxins circulate and become neurotoxic to the nervous system. Genetic predispositions also affect the ability to create and metabolize neurotransmitters and this can lead to neurotransmitter imbalance. Dr. Fong may also test neurotransmitter levels and match them with your genetic testing.
